The Essene cult has historically held strong antipathy to sexual freedom and placed a strong emphasis on celibacy. The text of this verse can be read as the actions of an excluded minority to combat the effects of sexuality and lust in modern life. At the start of their campaign they are not well received by those of northern France and despite their efforts childbirth still continues amongst those deemed to be unworthy parents.
